Make Grill Marks on a Flattop

  • Step 1

Turn the heat on high. Use a grill brush to scrape the grate surface to remove burned-on debris and food. This allows the heat to transfer to the meat more accurately to create detailed grill marks.

  • Step 2

Place the grill grate grid on the flattop. Allow it to warm up for five to 10 minutes on the hottest part of the grill.

  • Step 3

Add the steak press to the flattop. Place it on the hottest part of the grill to allow it to heat up.

  • Step 4

Coat your meat with your favorite seasonings. Seasonings like salt will help dry the surface of the meat, which will make the grill marks more distinct.

  • Step 5

Place your choice of meat on the flattop on the grill grate. Meats like steak and chicken will create the best grill marks due to their large surface area. Allow the meat to begin cooking.

  • Step 6

Apply a thin layer of vegetable oil on the bottom of the steak press to prevent it from sticking to the meat. Set the steak press onto the meat. Push down slightly to mark the surface of the meat with parallel lines. Place the press back onto the hottest part of the grill. Add another coat of vegetable oil onto the steak press after two minutes, and then move the meat 45 degrees with tongs. Press down onto the meat to make this set of lines perpendicular to the first set of lines, creating a diamond pattern on the meat.

  • Step 7

Flip the meat over with the tongs. Repeat the process of searing and marking the meat. You can choose to sear only one side of the meat if you prefer, but you still need to flip it to prevent burning the marked side. Continue cooking your meat to your desired doneness.
