Add Smoke Chips to a Gas Grill

  • Step 1

Soak the wood chips in water for at least 15 minutes or for the amount recommended by the manufacturer. The total amount of chips used will vary depending on the amount of food being cooked, the degree of smokiness desired and the type of chips.

  • Step 2

Read your gas grill's instruction manual to see if it has a container for the wood chips. If it does, follow the directions.

  • Step 3

Wrap a handful of wood chips in a pouch made from aluminum foil with holes punched in it. Do this if your gas grill does not have a container for the wood chips.

  • Step 4

Place the pouch on the grill. For gas grills without a wood chip container, some smoking veterans suggest placing the pouch directly on the burner, and others suggest placing it on the grill.
